Michael Fred Stiefel, M.D.
Dr. Stiefel is a fellowship trained, board certified neurosurgeon specializing in Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery as well as Neurosurgical Oncology; surgery for brain tumors. Dr Stiefel’s training enables him to treat vascular diseases and brain tumors with traditional cranial and microsurgery, endovascular neurosurgery, as well as radiosurgery. As an active member of the Piedmont Brain Tumor Center, Dr. Stiefel is a part of the multidisciplinary MD Anderson Cancer Network.
Dr. Stiefel received his MD and PhD from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. He completed his neurosurgery training at the University of Pennsylvania. He gained extensive experience in the treatment of brain tumors at the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center. He completed additional training in diagnostic neuroradiology and was the Groff Cerebrovascular Research Fellow as well as an NIH research fellow. Following residency, Dr. Stiefel completed a fellowship in Endovascular Neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona. Dr. Stiefel has received additional training in stereotactic radiosurgery utilizing both Cyberknife and Gamma Knife techniques for the treatment of brain tumors and vascular diseases.
Dr. Stiefel has lead programs at the University of Pennsylvania as Director of the Comprehensive Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery Program as well as New York Medical College as Chief of Neurovascular Surgery and Director of the Neurovascular Institute. Dr. Stiefel is a senior member of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery and was awarded Subspecialty Certification in NeuroEndovascular Surgery by The Society of Neurological Surgeons Committee on Advanced Subspecialty Training. He has been at the forefront of stroke and aneurysm treatments while helping to develop and trial new devices and techniques. Dr. Stiefel enjoys living in Atlanta with his wife, two children and their dog. In his spare time, he and his family enjoy the outdoors, hiking and skiing. Since moving to Atlanta they are exploring all that Atlanta and Georgia have to offer.
